Vantage Resources require an IIS Network Engineer for one of their largest,
Dublin based Public Sector clients. This is a 9 month CONTRACT based in Dublin
City Centre.
The role will see you

* Provide in-depth knowledge and assistance to the existing Network Web Hosting
team on all aspects of hosting-related networking including hardware,
software and services and to participate fully in the day-to-day activities
of the team

Ideal Candidates will have

* 3 years experience in an extensive web hosting environment OR three years
experience in a large LAN/WAN environment, with at least 1 year working in a
senior role
* Experience of performing a similar role in the past
* Cisco or security qualification or Microsoft MCSE, preferably with IIS
qualifications
* Extensive Microsoft Windows (2000/2003) experience in a hosting environment,
covering such areas as Active Directory, Group Policy, IIS, .NET, clustering
and load balancing
* Extensive firewall experience, Cisco routing, switching and fire walling
technologies
* Good knowledge of SAN operations and of monitoring and management tools,
ideally MS MOM and MS SMS
* LAN/WAN, Design / Implementation / troubleshooting skills
* Good understanding of TCP/IP Protocol, plus TCP/IP applications such as
Telnet, FTP, SNMP, DHCP, NAT, NTP etc.
* Excellent level of VPN and IPSec skills, including design/ troubleshooting/
implementation, especially with Cisco products
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both individually and
as part of a team

Customers who bought a first-generation iPad in the last two weeks can opt to return their device to Apple, or request a $100 refund, now that the iPad 2 has been announced. Also, the company will release a new dock designed to fit the smaller form factor of the iPad 2, though no new keyboard dock has been shown.

As first reported by Electricpig.co.uk, Apple will refund the price difference to anyone who has their original purchase receipt and makes the request in the company’s standard 14-day return window. With the iPad 2 announced on Wednesday, that would mean buyers as far back as Wednesday, Feb. 16 would be eligible.

Of course, with the purchase also within the 14-day return window, customers could also opt to return the first-generation iPad entirely. For the same original purchase price, those buyers could wait for the iPad 2 to go on sale on March 11, as the second-generation device has the same six price points as the first iPad.

Though the iPad 2 starts at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi-only model, like its predecessor, Apple on Wednesday began to clear its inventory of last year’s model. With the old iPad now on clearance from Apple, the starting price has dropped by $100, meaning customers can buy the 16GB Wi-Fi-only model for just $399.

Following yesterday’s iPad 2 announcement, Apple also updated its official accessories page for the iPad to feature new products designed specifically for the second-generation device. Among them is a new dock made to fit the new, thinner profile of the iPad 2.

Google whacks link farms

Google has made a major change to its search algorithms in order to try to scrub more link farm results from appearing near the top of search results.

The search and advertising giant tweaks results all the time, but said these changes would hit 11.8 per cent of results, and so it wanted people to know what is going on.

Results almost always contain at least one or two links to pages that have merely scraped content from other sites based on “hot” search terms likely to attract people from search engines.

The company said the list was not based on the Chrome browser blacklist extension. But it did compare what sites people chose to block via the extension and what websites its algorithms were identifying as crap sites.

Looking at the top few dozen sites which people chose to block from their search results, the algorithms caught 84 per cent of them, which Google described as “strong independent confirmation of the user benefits”.

So far the changes are US-only, but will be rolled out worldwide if all goes well.
